Hello, I came here to look for advice. My son Ricardo Jr. used to be a very energetic boy, and was very active. He would always wake me up to go outside and play, which I didn't wan't to seeing as it is too early, but I would go reluctantly, wishing he we would stop. Well, I got my wish. Sometime between then and his 8th birthday, something happened. He just stopped all together. He wasn't as active and his appetite got huge. I let it slide and before I knew it, my once slim, fit, and healthy son became an extremely overweight couch potato. I've tried getting him back to his usual routine, but he doesn't want to do it. Bringing up his weight doesn't help either as he avoids it altogether. I just want my son back. Thanks, Teresa

Hello, I have some concerns around my son's weight. He used to be a very active kid, hockey, soccer, track, and with being a time came a huge appetite. Last year he broke his leg on the ice and was in a wheelchair for 3 months and he continued to eat the same as he always had. My mother in law came and stayed with us and looked after him while he was stuck at home and then picked him up from school when he was back at school. I was working evenings and often doing 7 in a row so I didn't see Tony much during the start of his weight gain. My mother in law let him eat what he wanted and he did following the same food routine he was used to going to McDonald's after practice but he wasn't going to practice anymore and he wasn't exercising. He put on a lot of weight very quickly. In those 3 months he went from an athletic 120 lbs to a fat 150 lbs without much muscle. He now doesn't want ... He was too slow for his soccer team, track team and hockey team and he didn't care. He seemed relieved. Now all he wants to do is sit on the couch and eat the same amount and kind of food as when he was active. My mother in law let's him and I can't make her or my husband see reason. My little star player is now becoming this fat blob and no one cares. Help. (view less)

Help! My son will turn 15 in one week. He is 6 foot 1, And weighs 360 pounds. We have been battling his weight his entire life. Doctors, diets, sports, exercise classes, etc. HE does not care!!!!! He refuses sports or exercise. He lays around all the time because he is “tired”. Well of course he is! We have taken away all electronics. He is also failing every class, he has ADD and ODD. Oppositional Defiant Disorder. I’m so afraid he will just lay in his room and never do anything with his life!

Hi Janis, thank you for your response and sorry for the late reply! My sons have always been able to come to me whenever they needed assistance with something, so like you said I've decided to stop nagging them on their weights, but I do make it known that I am quite concerned about it. To be honest, I'm quite shocked at their eating habits. They both share a car and I know that they must be eating fast food on the daily, sometimes I have to drive their car unexpectadly and I will see Wendy's and McDonalds wrappers in the car (which is quite disgusting). Benny is in his senior year of high school and will be attending university in the fall. I am concerned that things will get worse at university - one of his cousins went away to university this year (not too far - about 90 kilometers away) and I stopped by to see him a few days ago as I was doing some work in the region and I can ... One of my concerns is that these habits will transfer down to younger siblings, I have a son who is 15 and one who is 7. The 7 year old is very active (basketball, baseball, football, hockey etc.) but the 15 year old is not active (very into the music performance scene) and I can tell he is getting a bit bigger but he hasn't gotten his yearly physical yet. Janis, how is your son doing? I hope he is adjusting well to the new school. (view less)

Hello everyone. I wrote on this site roughly a year ago about my two boys, Spencer and Benny. At the time, Spencer was 5'8 and 220 and Benny was 5'10 and 245. Unfortunately, their eating habits have not reduced and both of them have gained a considerable amount of weight. A few days ago, I took both of them to the doctor and I was shocked with the amount of weight gained. Spencer weighed in at 262 at 5'9 and Benny was 290 at 5'10. The doctor was concerned and talked to them about it, but soon to be 17 and 18 year old boys are great at tuning people out, or they just didn't listen to what he said. I have tried to talk to them about it, but they refuse to talk about it with me. I've tried my hardest to not get upset with them, or make irrational decisions. Please help!

It’s been two years I think since I posted on here about my son David and his weight problem. I’ve no idea how active this board is, but I don’t have anyone in my life who can relate to my sadness about this, so hopefully others will see this and be able to empathise. David has literally been a fat boy his entire life. He was a short, 10lb baby at birth, and has pretty much remained that way ever since. I personally have never had issues with my weight, and nor has his dad or his siblings, so it’s been a contentious subject in our household to say the least. Fortunately though, since my last post, David has managed to lose almost 22lbs. Ok, in two years that doesn’t sound like so much, but trust me, for him it’s amazing. He has fought so hard to do this, cutting out all the chocolate and soft drinks he binged on and exercising with his brothers religiously. We’re really all so... He has fought so hard to do this, cutting out all the chocolate and soft drinks he binged on and exercising with his brothers religiously. We’re really all so proud of him, but, it never stops does it 😢 It’s probably going to take him many more years to get anywhere close to being considered a healthy weight, but I’d stupidly thought that because he’d lost a noticeable amount, the kids at school would ease up on him. Did they though? Did they hell!!! If anything they doubled their efforts to torture him even more. I can’t even go into some of the things he’s been subjected to this year without bawling, and these are just the incidents I know about! He hides so much from me, just like he’s hid his binges for years. I really do feel that his comfort eating is as much a form of suicide as jumping off a bridge would be. The only difference is, it’s slower. There’s so much sadness in our kids, I can’t even. The school has been useless, and I’m dreading now that it’s all going to start again when he goes back. He’s worked his ass off this summer, but I’m terrified it’s all gonna be undone as soon as the bell rings. All his hard work could be sabotaged because of what?! Because he’s fat?!?! Honestly, anyone who reads this, I hope so much your children don’t suffer at the hands of others because of their size. It is so cruel and so hard to build up their self esteem from it. You can blame our kids for finding solace in a candy bar. (view less)

Help! I took my son Leo for a physical yesterday and it left me with more questions than answers. Leo is 4'9" and weighs 159.He'so grown 2 inches and put on 84 pounds since last July! The pediatrician said all the lab results show no problems like prediabetes. When I asked her why he's put on so much weight she said he eats too much. Tell me something I didn't already know! She then said it's probably "prepuberty weight gain". I don't know if I can believe this. None of his friends (all the same age and grade in school) are gaining any extra weight at all and all seem to have normal appetites while Leo eats more than I do at every meal. The doctor told Leo to watch how much he eats and sure to exercise but that's something I knew already. Have any of you parents gone through something like this with your child? Any advice? I'm worried about my son Leo.He was always thin but has been putting on a lot of weight since last Christmas. I'm a single dad and try to have healthy meals with fast food and pizza once in a while. Leo is always hungry now and complains if I don't have enough food for him to eat seconds. We went to the pool today and he's beyond chubby now. Any ideas about how I can help him to not eat so much? For example breakfast this morning for him was a big bowl of cereal, orange juice, and 4 pieces of toast.

My 17 year old son Benji has gone from a bone thin 5'10 and 160 to 245 pounds in just over a year. Last year (Apr/May 2017), he was on the soccer team and quite athletic with practice and workouts nearly every day. He decided at the end of last year to not continue soccer so he could better his grades in preparation for university. Fast forward to June of 2018 and he's 245 pounds. I knew he had gained weight, I'm not completely oblivious to the change as gaining 85 pounds in a year is quite a big change to say the least. He outgrew clothes faster (S/28-30 to XL 38-40) than you could ever imagine but he has a job and bought clothes with his own money so I didn't say much of anything. He outgrew clothes faster (S/28-30 to XL 38-40) than you could ever imagine but he has a job and bought clothes with his own money so I didn't say much of anything. His appetite has increased but not exponentially so, definitely not enough to gain all this weight just from my food alone. He'll go for seconds at dinner but my food isn't unhealthy - he will load up his plate with vegetables as well as protein/pasta. He (or his brother) will buy junk food and store it in the house. Currently in my pantry there is probably a week's worth of candy/junk if you were to only eat that for 3 meals a day. I've told both of them to stop buying it but it is their money. But, all of my children eat it and when they have friends over they eat it. His athleticism has reduced to zero. He has a car (well sharing with his twin) so he doesn't need to take the bus. He gets winded just doing the flight of stairs in the house or walking around the mall or supermarket; it's obviously taking a physical toll on him. Looks have changed, went from literally skin, bones and some muscle to gut hanging over shorts, love handles poking out, manboobs increasing in size and face from angular to pudgy - there's no hiding this gain. He's eating a crap ton outside of the house. He has a car and a job and I can almost guarantee that he's stopping after work (if not before and after) to eat. Include lunch and breakfast. I'm not sure what to do in this situation. He is the only one who has gained a lot of weight - his twin gained some (maybe 15 pounds) but that's from another scenario that I am well aware of. I can't take his money, he has his own job and he's fiscally responsible (saving, charity, etc.). I'm not going to take his car away because I don't have concrete proof about the after school binging (85 pounds in a year, there must be some binging). I have spoken to him about healthy living and stuff and whenever I bring up his weight he either refuses to talk or shrugs it off. (view less)

Hello, I'm a mother to one wonderful boy and aunt to two nephews. I work after school and my sister-in-law takes my son to her place and looks after him for the evening. She is a bigger lady and her boys are, in my opinion, quite fat. Over the last year my son has put on some weight. I didn't notice it until I was over at her house for a pool party for her youngests birthday. All the boys were in swim shorts and I noticed my son has got fat rolls and little boy boobies just like his cousins. I'm not sure how to approach this with him or my sister-in-law. How do I tell her that her kids are fat and my kid is getting fat from being at her house too? Please help!

Hi everyone. So my 7-year old has been under evaluation for about a year for his weight. I can’t specifically remember his height but I know he weights about 70 lbs. So I’m a little worried because we have been taking small steps, like eating better and exercising more, but he missed his last doctors appointment, about 6 months ago, because of some factors in our life, like my husband getting into a car accident and us having no transportation for a while. My son has a doctors appointment next month, and I’m a little worried because there really hasn’t seemed to be much difference in his weight yet. We have started getting more into exercising and coming up with games to get us back into a healthy lifestyle, as we did get out of it for a little while with everything going on. Does anyone have any recommendations in terms of interesting exercise routines or exercise games for a 7-year old boy? Thank you!
