Hi! I want to ask the parents of overweight children if they are overweight themselves. I have an overweight child and I am an overweight adult. I would like to hear from other overweight parents about ways we could help our children by setting examples ourselves and lose weight. If there is anybody out there who agrees with me please let me know and I would certainly love to correspond. Thank you.......

My daughter is 5 foot 3, and weighs 147 lbs. I was wondering, if that was a healthy weight- height-wise anyways. If it turns out that she's over weight I'm not going to flip out, she is after all stronger than me. All I want to do is just maybe look out for some possible future weight problems.

I have two other children and i am a very busy mother. i just feel that my daughter needs a good diet, where by she could loose weight fast but yet, not feel depressed. Can you help me out? she loves chocolates and the french sweet" crep". she also likes pizza and chicken. My daughter is 14 and about 5 foot 6. I took her to the doctor today and was a bit upset about how they went about it. i never knew she had a weight problem, but i guess she does. they weighed her and everything but after the appointment they pulled me aside and told me, "your daughter weighs 180 pounds. she should weigh somewhere around 130 or 140. It would be ok if she has muscle but she doesn't have a lot. you should put her on a diet beacuse she is around 40 pounds too heavy." it wasn't exactly like that but still, why couldn't they have just told both of us? it's her, so she should have the right to know from the doctor. then in the car on the way home i told her that she's a little too big and she didn't believe me since the doctor didn't tell her. then when we got home i told her to go on the scale and when she saw 182 and the chart i had in a book showing girls her age she agreed to shed a little weight. but still, i'm dissappointed that the doctors didn't tell her straight.

Hello everyone. We went to the dietician today. We relearned some things we knew and learned new things. I wanted to share a few of the ideas we learned today. It will be hard for many children to make these changes and hard as parents to make the changes with them. The dietician said it will not work if the whole family does not do it together. I hope this will help some of you. The most important thing is portion controll. We tend to poor and not measure out our foods. This is a big factor in gaining weight. Also any thing that is fat free or light (mayo, salad dressing, yogurt) is good for our kids. One coke a day adds 15 pounds in a year! Diet anything or sugar free anything cuts the calories and help keep the pounds off, along with 1% milk. We are trying splenda as a sugar substitute on cerals and in unsweetened tea. For lunch Amanda will take baked chips (15 is portion), Lean ham ... (view more)

Hi, my son is 11 years old. He is 5'3" tall and weighs 171 pounds. For over a year now he has been off and on oral steroids for an eye condition called Iritis. He wasn't skinny before he started the medicine but he did gain 37 lbs. while he was on the medicine. He has been off off the medicine now since November but he still seems to be gaining weight. The DR. said it could take 6-8 months for it to get out of his system but in the meantime he needs to cut down on his eating and his sweets. I know I shouldn't bring them in my home and I am going to stop but I need to know if there is someone out there who has any suggestions for parents who need to help their children lose weight without making them feel terrible about themselves. He starts Jr. High next year and I don't want him to be made fun of. By the way, he is an only child and my husband and I pretty much let him eat anything he... (view more)

My daughter is 10 years old and weighs 179 pounds. She is very active. She plays basketball, soccer, and softball for all but 2 1/2 months of the year. She swims every day during the summer and is biking, jumping on a trampoline, or just playing most of the time. We do not eat fast foods but 1-2 times a month, no fried foods and very little sweets ( cake, cookies, ect.). Yet she continues to gain weight at a steady pace. She does have asthma and a few minor heart problems. None of these should make her gain weight. We have just got an appointment to see a dietician to help us. Does anyone have any other suggestions on what we can do? We hope you find the help you are looking for and that your children reach their goals.

Hello to everyone my name is Janette and I have three children .I am concerned with children's weight problems and what they are going through because I too was an overweight child and adult. I have been doing a lot of reading, I am now reaching the posiablity of opening a childrens health center to help parent, and children like you all learn about safe and healthy ways of controlling weight thru diet and exercise. What I want to know is if there is a need for such a place and if you would take advantage of such a program

My son is 4 and 1/2 years old, he's 3'11" and weighs about 76 pounds. He's been a little husky since he was 2, but now he's getting fat. It hurts so much when he comes home from prescool/day care and tells me that the kids make fun of him because of his weight. He lives with his dad, and each time I see him he gets bigger. He goes through clothes like people go through tissues...he's wearing a 12-14 in boys clothes. At this rate, he'll be wearing men's clothes in no time. He loves food and his father is forever giving him fried chicken and pizza and he doesn't make our son drink water. It's always juice, punch or whole milk, even though I've told him to give him water or at least skim milk and cut out the junk-food. But his father lets him eat whatever he wants. If my son sees someone eating something, he wants it...even if he just finished a meal. I'm worried that the extra weight is going to cause health problems in the future. Please help!!

My daughter is now fourteen. She is the youngest yet tallest girl in her freshmen class. Being 6'0 tall already makes her feel more insecure because she's at least 5 inches taller than most of the other girls, and she has a larger stomach. She is 6'0 tall and weighs about 180-185lbs. She could be a lot worse, but I know if she lost at least 10 or 15lbs, she would be a lot happier. Does anyone have any good tips for me to share with my daughter?
