 Help me find support!

=> I want to lose weight, but I have no support from my mom or brother. What can I do to get support?

You are right...support is a huge part of losing weight! Here are some people or places to consider to find support:

  • Tell a trusted friend about your desire to be healthier. They may listen when you have a hard day or go on walks with you.
  • Find an exercise buddy at home or on this website. Checking in with someone may make you more motivated and you may have more fun!
  • Meet with your doctor or a dietitian. A professional maybe able to provide you with one on one support. They may even be able to communicate with your family so they will support you.
  • Talk with a school counselor or an adult at your church, temple, mosaic, or synagogue. Maybe there is a neighbor you trust who would be willing to listen and support you.
  • Visit the chat room or bulletin boards in this site for support. Many kids and teens feel the same lack of support at home. Together, you can virtually support each other! Good luck!

You have been overweight for most your life. You also have been dieting most of your life too. Sounds like you were about to give up until you realized you are not alone. You are right to note that many other kids and teens are in your shoes. There are many people who have been struggling with their weight for a long time. There is no easy answer to your question except to keep trying. There is ALWAYS hope! Research shows that people who are successful at weight loss try at least 20 times before being successful. Keep in mind that every change you make affects your health. Weight loss is hard. It takes a long time. Finding a support system in your town or on this website may help you continue to make that effort. Be good to yourself and make small goals. You will get there...I believe in you!

Will bulimia help me lose weight?

=> I Have pretty many questions the first is about being belimic. I heard about people doing this. I know it is really bad for you. I know I would never do it I just had a question about it. If you do it for say a week to a month just to lose the weight, then you go back to the diet you were trying, wouldn't you just gain the weight back? One last thing is that I wanted to knowq if you could send me a few enter net sources where I can find things on easy exercises to do.

Bulimia is a type of eating disorder that is common in teens. You are right, it IS really bad on your body. Some people consider using bulimia to help them lose weight. In reality, though, bulimia does not help a person lose weight. It makes most people have a crazy relationship with food. The person focuses too much time on bingeing and planning binges. The purging does not remove all of the calories (or even most) from the binges. It messes up how your body deals with food. After a person recovers from bulimia, there is a time when her or his metabolism is not working like it should. If you are bulimic, speak with a parent or health professional immediately. It is a very serious condition and can be fatal.

The first step in healthy weight loss is realizing you need to change. You are saying that your quality of life is affected because you are embarrassed by your body. Realize, you are not alone. Many people on this website feel embarrassed or even ashamed of their body. That is normal. I hope, for you, that interacting with others going through the same thing will help you feel better about yourself.

There are a million different ways to lose weight. I recommend, first, recognizing that you may eat for reasons other than hunger. Many people on this site discuss "emotional eating" where they eat because they are bored, lonely, sad, mad, happy, frustrated, etc. Recognizing this is an issue is an important step in your successful weight loss. Next, you have to give up the comfort food gives you when you feel those uncomfortable feelings mentioned above. This means finding other ways with dealing with the feelings. This is a lifelong commitment to dealing with feelings differently.

Look through this website. Consider the information on healthy eating and activity if you need more resources on those. More importantly, take advantage of the support here. Go to the chat room, visit the bulletin boards often, and meet for Lucy's weekly chat. Taking it slowly with lots of support will help you get there in a healthy way. You may hit a plateau yet you will get there. You have the control and I believe you can do it!

How much fat should I eat?

=> I am trying to watch the fat that I eat, and I was just wondering for my age, height and weight what is the fat intake recommended for me?

Many people trying to lose weight consider cutting down on fat to lose weight. This is especially important if a person has high cholesterol. The amount of fat recommended is based on the amount of calories a person eats in a day. So the answer is different for everyone. Generally, the amount of fat recommended is 20% to 30% of total calories. A person who should eat about 2000 calories should generally eat between 45 and 67 grams of fat per day.

 I always mess up!

=> I just can't do it. I'm not sure why. I've been wanting to lose weight since December now but haven't got anywhere. My weight keeps flucuating. I was about 150 in December, two months ago I was 170.. and now I'm 160. But I'm not doing anything about it, my weight keeps changing. I get pumped and say, "Oh.. I'm starting tommorow." But then I just can't do it, or mess it up and say I'll just start the next day. It's an on going train. I read somewhere if you fast for a day to two it can get your metabolism up. I DO NOT and WILL NOT develop an ED, I was just wondering if you think that would help a bit? I'm willing to try anything. I think about getting an ED sometimes and have made myself purge a few times, but I do not have the passion or drive to develop one. I find that, a good thing. I don't know what to do. It's close to summer now and I haven't lost any weight and my eating habits are still the same. Please help.

Developing an unhealthy eating disorder is NEVER the right way to diet. Restricting too much (or fasting) or making yourself vomit are very unhealthy and can be fatal. In the end, they are NEVER worth it! Since you are considering these unhealthy practices, I get the sense that you are desperate to lose weight. Further, your email mentions all the times you have failed and how you feel you will never be successful. I believe your negative beliefs about weight loss are preventing you from getting there. These beliefs are often called a "self-fulfilling prophecies" and they ruin many people's healthy eating plan. The key for you maybe to change the way you think about your eating and exercise. Make smaller steps that you know you can do. Make sure to reward yourself after meeting those goals. Track your progress. Lastly, find a weight loss buddy at home or on this site. Together, you can keep each other thinking positively! Good luck!

Help me stop eating for reasons other than hunger!

=> How do i control my eating habits, if i eat for comfort?

=> I have a very stressful life and when I'm stressed or sad I eat and I can't seem to stop.I need to know how to lose weight as soon as possible. I don't want to get sick or anything. Please help me.

=> I want to lose weight, but the problem is I'm addicted to junk food. How can I break that habit and begin to eat healthier foods?

Many kids and teens report eating for comfort when life gets too tough. Further, many adults do that too. Society even normalizes this with the emphasis on food during holidays and marketing of certain comfort foods. You are correct to point out that controlling this issue will bring you weight loss success. Here at Blubberbuster.com, the management believes that the toughest and most important step is to give up the comfort food brings during rough times. This needs to be done for the rest of a person's life. Instead of food for comfort, a person must find other ways to cope with boredom, loneliness, sadness, anger, happiness, frustration, stress, etc. Take it slow and allow yourself time to sort through the exact feelings that have you grabbing food. Talk about it with other people at home or on this site. If you feel it getting too out of your control, consider meeting with a counselor experienced in overeating or compulsive eating. This maybe the key for you to be healthy!

My parents don't help me eat healthy!

=> My dad always gives me a lot to eat. How can I start eating healthy when my dad yells at me for not eating everything that he puts on my plate. He gives me a lot.He also tempts me to eat a lot of fatty foods. He always takes me out to McDonald's and other fast food places. If it isn't fast food its a diner. Can you please help me and fast I keep gaining!!!

Many people grew up being a part of the "clean plate club." To such people, not eating everything is consider bad and even morally wrong! I wonder if you have spoken with your father about how important eating healthy is to you. Consider sitting down with him outside of a meal time. Calmly and without using judgment, tell him the reasons you are concerned about your weight. Next, tell him the best ways he can support you. If he still doesn't want to help, control the things you can. Drink low calorie drinks, pick the healthiest snacks, and the healthiest choices at fast food places. I encourage you to exercise more. If you cannot get the support from your father, consider discussing it with your doctor, a teacher, or school counselor. Let her or him know what you think is important. They can support you. They may even be able to better communicate the information to your father. Lastly, show your father this website. Let him check out the parent section and educate himself. Good luck!

I don't have the drive to lose weight!

=> I am 15 years old and weigh 308 pounds. My family refuses to help even a little. I dont have friends to go out and walk with. My doctors are so negative towards me that I get sooooo angry at them. I barely go outside becuase I feel like the whole world is waiting for me to come out so they can laugh at me. I really need to loose weight, but I cant stick to anything. I drink a 2 liter bottle of soda a day. I never drink water or work out. I don't have the drive to make me wake up and work out or turn away from that 3rd pudding. It's just sooooo hard for me. I dont knw how much longer I can take this. Please, please, pleas help me.

You want to lose weight yet it seems like no one is helping you get there. Sounds like your doctor wants to help yet is coming across in a negative way. From your message, it sounds like you know what to change to lose weight--drink less soda, have 1 or 2 helpings instead of 3--yet it is TOO hard to change it. Thank you for sharing your struggle! Many kids and teens feel the same way! Weight loss is very hard, yet I believe you do have the power to change.

Sometimes eating a certain way can become more than just a bad habit. It can become something a person is addicted to. Sounds like you are addicted to eating a certain way and it is just too hard to "go cold turkey" or stop eating all the high calorie foods. You need a plan to help slowly decrease the foods you are addicted to. Consider doing these two things to start:

1.) Meet with your school counselor or another counselor. Many times, eating the foods may be a way for you to feel better when you are sad, mad, lonely, or bored. Talking to someone who will support you and listen will help you make the steps to change your eating and exercise habits. The person can help you find things to do when you crave certain foods. Also, since you do not have a person in mind to exercise with, consider finding a weight loss buddy on this site. Many kids and teens in this online community go through the same struggles as you do everyday. They will support you!

2.) Make a plan to slowly decrease the foods. Decrease it SLOWLY! Remember that weight loss takes a long time, so be patient with yourself. I would not weigh yourself. Just focus on how you are changing your addictions. For example, in your question you shared that you drink a 2 liter of soda per day. Maybe your first goal would be to drink 1 1/2 liters per day for a week. The next week, cut it down to 1 liter per day. SLOWLY decrease it. Weight loss is NOT a race, yet a journey. With patience and support, you will get there!

Help! I need to lose weight or I will get diabetes!

=> What can i do to lose 20 pounds in 3 months? i have to lose it or i could become diabetic.

Sounds like you are very concerned about your health. Many kids are told they will become affected by diabetes if they don't lose weight. The key here is for you to start where you can. Weight loss is a journey that happens in steps. Pick 2 or 3 things to work on this week. Lucy started to work on losing weight by eating more fruits and vegetables. She also started walking more. After you pick 2 or 3 things you can change, start! During that first week, write down everyday how you are doing. At the end of the week, check to see if you were able to make the changes. If you did--great! Pick new goals for the next week. If you were not able to make the goals, try again. Be patient with yourself and you will make your body healthier! Good luck!
