I'm sorry if this doesn't make a lot of sense. I'm in shock still about my son. I got a call that he had collapsed at school and went to the hospital. They told me it was a mild heart stutter brought on by obesity. I said that wasn't something 12 year olds had and they said yes but most 12 year olds don't weight 302 lbs. I couldn't believe it. I still don't. I know I hadn't weighed him in a while and I knew he was a few lbs overweight but thats more than his dad. He is hooked up to all these monitors and has oxygen and I can see his rolls and stretch marks and how large his chest is (bigger than mine!) and it is scaring me. I don't know what to do and I'm worried I'm going to lose my beautiful baby boy. Help.

Thanks Frank. We have got my son a CPAP now and that is helping him with staying awake more. Mostly he lays in bed with just a sheet on and snacks. Does your son have stretch marks from the weight gain?

Jane, please don't be so hard on Help Please!!. I have the same problem with my wife. She constantly overfeeds our son and thinks he gets cuter the fatter he gets. She doesn't listen to reason, same as Help Please!!'s husband. What am I supposed to do, divorce her? What good would that do---she'd probably get custody of our boy and keep overfeeding him.

Help please!! Your son has gained 8 lbs in a month? What is your husband feeding him? 8 lbs in a month is a lot of weight to gain. At this rate he will break 350 lbs this year. Your son is going to die before he is 30 if you don't start making changes and get your husband under control. I'm sorry to be so blunt but this is serious.

So is there anything I can do? What do you do when your wife does that?

Your husband sounds like my wife, Help Please!!. My wife makes malted milk shake with milk, ice cream, and malted milk powder for our son before bedtime as a reward for being a "a good boy" during the day. She uses food as a reward. If he cleans his plate at dinner, he gets a second dessert. If I have to scold him for not doing his chores, she gives him a treat because he's feeling sad. Anything is an excuse to give him a treat on top of the big meals and snacks he already eats

Hi Frank. My husband is fat but our son outweighs him but is much shorter. It sounds like your son has a similar weight gain to mine. Since getting out of the hospital he has put on 8 lbs with no change in height. The trash is filled with tubs of ice cream, fast food wrappers, cookies boxes and all sorts of junk. My husband also likes to make Sam milkshakes as a bedtime snack.

Help Please !!, is your husband fat too? If he is, I think that explains the problem. He's treating your son like a little buddy, indulging his every wish. My wife indulges our son. She's fat and so am I but I think I'm more realistic. My son is gaining weight rapidly, 6/7 pounds a month. At this rate, he'll be over 300 by the time he's 12, just like your boy. I'm on vacation this week and next and I see how lazy my son has become. He says it's too hot to go outside and play, just stays inside and snacks. My wife says he's big because she and I are so he comes by it naturally.because it runs in the family (although I was skinny when I was his age. When school is in session she drives him and picks him up even though we only live 3 blocks from school. I've decided to keep the peace and say nothing now but be there when our son decides he wants to lose weight

Thanks Angel. How much does your son weigh?
I sat down with my son, Sam, and he said he wants to follow his dad's advice and that he is happy being big. I'm not sure what to do as it's two against one.

Your husband is wrong. I feel bad for you. You need to decide whether you would prefer to lose your son to an early death, God forbid, or lose your husband to a potential divorce. This is not the time to go along with your husband to keep harmony in the family. I'm a husband myself and a father of a moderately overweight boy. I would expect my wife to get harsh and serious with me if she felt i were causing the health problem or preventing it from getting better. My wife and I have had tough conversations with each other in our decade-plus of marriage. It seems that you and your husband aren't communicating well right now. I know very little about you, and even less about your husband, but i have some professional experience in family related issues. You need, at least, marriage counseling, in addition to the obesity treatment for your son. Good luck, and I will say a prayer for you and your family.

He is out now but we have been referred to an obesity specialist. My husband says it's a waste of time and he won't take him. He is also refusing to cooperate with a diet plan or an exercise plan.

How is your son son doing, Help Please? Is he still in the hospital? I know how hard it is to keep track of a boy's weight. My son is 10 and 182. You buy them new clothes and the next you know the boy is a size bigger and it's back again to the husky boys department. Same thing with food. My boy has a big appetite and if we try to limit portion size or snacks, he pouts and silks so we just let him eat

It sounds like your husband and you need to have a serious chat about what he is feeding your son. Like Matty said, 300 lbs at 12 is not an accident. That's serious amounts of unhealthy food that need to be eaten.

My husband said he started missing school because he was falling asleep a lot. He also has knee and back pain and difficulty walking. So Sam stayed home and he made sure he didn't have to move much so that there wasn't pain and he could sleep lots. It sounds like he slept and played his playstation. My husband said he just got Sam good food. The doctor told us Sam has a lot of vitamin deficiency which I'm not sure how when he is so big.

Do you know why he’s missing school? What is he doing during the day? I don’t want to pass blame on you, but it’s concerning how you are not aware of what is going on. He’s 12 years old and you and your husband are providing most if not all of his food. He’s not getting to 300 at 12 by eating fruits and vegetables. You need to have a talk with your husband about what he’s feeding Sam and why he’s not going to school because honestly whatever your husband is doing is killing him. 4’10 and 302 is a BMI of 63 and that’s akin to an average 5’10 male being almost 450 pounds.

He is 4'10 which the doctor says is on the short side. My husband is a stay at home dad. He has worked from home since the pandemic and takes care of Sam, takes him to school, etc. I wake up after Sam has gone to school and work until late. When I come home Sam is usually sitting in his room so I hadn't really seen him move a lot for a long time now
My husband admitted Sam has really been struggling the last year with his weight and has actually missed a lot of school. This was the first day he had gone in months. A lot of the time when I thought Sam had already gone to school he was actually at home in his room.

Hi there, I’m sorry to hear about your son. It’s scary when a child collapses. I’m a medical professional and a few things I wanted to mention. One, a mild heart stutter will not cause one to collapse. That’s akin to an irregular heartbeat. There’s something more serious at play, which you should investigate. Two, in order to move forward you have to address the past. How did you not know that he was 300+ unless he’s at some massive height. I’m assuming there was some difficulty moving around, or very large clothes you had to buy. Difficulty fitting into places. At 12 you and your husband have full control over his eating and exercise. For him to be 300 at 12 you all must have been providing an excess of food and likely unhealthy junk food.
What do you need to do? It’s simple. He needs to eat less and move more. Walk around the block before dinner. Half of your plate filled with vegetables. No more fast food or tv dinners or unhealthy meals. No fried food.
