My son Akamu is obese. When I lived in Hawaii, My wife had died while giving birth so it had been my job as a parent to raise my child as healthy and strong as he could possibly get so I watched what he ate. I had taken him Tim to Illinois (where we currently live) but since he was born and taken here, his weight has just exploded! He is roughly 204 lbs but he is only 8! Recently, however, I had been looking through my YouTube history to find a video I had accidentally left, so I went in there and to my surprise, a video titled "tight fit in the tub" was waiting. I had searched even further and found even more videos of this kind of material and I know it sure that the only ones who have access to the iPad and account are me and my son. I don't know if this is what is influencing my son to gain weight, or any other factors. Help?

Reply from Hahn, Child's Age 8 - 04/22/18 - IP#: 172.58.140.xxx Thank you Janis for this. I'll be sure to excersise with him and only have healthy snacks around the house. Also, good luck to you with your son!
Reply from Janis, Child's Age 13 - 04/20/18 - IP#: 66.91.143.xxx Hahn, if your family is just you and your son, why not exercise together? Go walking together, do simple exercises like push-ups and sit-ups together. Since your son is so heavy, it may be hard for him at first but encourage his efforts, even he can do only one sit-up at first. Tell him how much you like spending time with him and doing things (rather than just sitting, watching TV and snacking.) Have only healthy snacks available, which you make sure to eat as well as your son. My son just idolizes his Uncle Glen (mr brother---Paul's birth father has never been a part of our lives) and I've noticed over the years how much he tries to do whatever Uncle Glen does. (The only problem is that my brother has gone from husky when he got married to very obese now---400 lbs+ 16 years later) but in terms of character development, I'm so happy my son Paul has his Uncle as his role model. Hahn, you serve the same role in your son's life. Good luck!

Reply from Janis, Child's Age 13 - 04/06/18 - IP#: 66.91.143.xxx How is your son doing, Hahn? What you describe is what I went through with my son Paul a couple of years ago when he suddenly went from slender to fat in a few months. Following the advice of some other parents here, I brought up with Paul the subject of his weight and his appetite. It seemed like he was outgrowing his clothes every couple of months, and as you say, it was a struggle to find things that fit him.I phrased the questions in terms of "Paul, you're growing so fast!" I didn't push him or try to seem nosey, and I never mentioned the word "fat" because I didn't want to seem negative and put him on the defensive. It took months for him to finally tell me that he thought his cousin Luke (2 years older and very fat then and even fatter now) was "cool". They're like brothers and spend a lot of time together. Luke's parents are in denial about his obesity and so he always has plenty of food and money to buy snacks and food when they go to the mall or to the movies. I decided all I can do is encourage Paul to be active rather than spending all his time playing video games, watching videos and TV, and playing cards with Luke. I go walking every day and always ask Paul to come with me because I need him with me for "protection" and "I like his company". You want to make your son feel he's helping you by exercising with you. The main thing is NOT to seem to criticize him for being heavy. You want to keep the communication between you open so he will always feel comfortable confiding in you. (I'm a single parent like you.) In the meantime, I admit there are times when I have to 'bite my tongue", like recently when we went shopping for Easter clothes for him and he finally had to take men's size 46 dockers. And he's only 13! But hang in there, Hahn. The main thing is that your son sees you as being supportive of him.
Reply from Hahn, Child's Age 8 - 03/17/18 - IP#: 172.58.142.xxx He has always been a heavy child. I dont know if he is interested in those things, and since his sudden explosion in weight, it been harder and harder to find clothes that will fit.
Reply from Janis, Child's Age 13 - 03/16/18 - IP#: 66.91.143.xxx Could it be that your son is curious about other kids who are overweight and searched on youtube? Has he always been heavy or did his weight increase after he began looking at the youtube videos?
