My family is trying to make a change. Last week we went to the doctors and the issue of weight got brought up as it always does and I got defensive as I always do. The doctor insisted this time that all 3 of my boys (14, 12 and 9) get blood work done as he was concerned. We went and they had blood taken and then went back on Friday. All three had high cholesterol and not just a little elevated but dangerously high. The two younger ones also have prediabetes. Today will be the first day we dont stop at mcdonalds for an after school snack. We have started going for walks this weekend and I realized how out of shape I am. I'm only a handful of pounds over and it has been a long time since I did anything vigorous. After 5 minutes I had 3 red faced panting boys with me. After 10 minutes they were begging to go home and I was feeling the strain myself. I didn't try and change their eating this weekend. I just watched closely at what they ate and when they ate it. It was no longer a mystery how they got to be fat. The $350 of groceries I had bought on Friday before we got the results was disappearing quickly into them and almost all of it was processed and fatty. Pizza rolls, pizza pockets, just plain pizza was being microwaved. Cans of coke were being consumed. Cookies and cake. It was alarming when I sat back and just watched how much they ate. I know plan to cut all that out. Hopefully the $350 / week I currently spend will decrease along with their cholesterol as we move to healthier foods. I just hope I'm not too late in making a change.

Hi Jolene. Things are not going very well. My ex-husband is sabotaging things and making it very difficult for me to keep them on a diet. I'm at a loss right now and haven't been forcing them to stick to the diet while they are with me. With their Dad feeding them junk food and me being mean Mommy not letting them have what they wanted I was getting a lot of backlash so I've caved for now. My email is annalisewinkler@gmail.com if you want to talk over that or we can chat here.

Hello Ann, I was just wondering how things are going in your efforts to help your sons eat healthy and lose weight. Best wishes, Jolerne

I'm worried my son will have the same problems, he's extremely large, at 375 pounds.

Hello Ann, at least you are making an effort to get your boys in shape. Have you tried to put in place something like walking after dinner or 20 mins of activity before video games or other electronics?

Hi Emily,
That's what I'm worried about for my boys and why I'm making a change. They are already diagnosed with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and two of them are very close to having type 2 diabetes. There's constant fighting and complaining right now in the house. They are not happy at all. Getting them to exercise is becoming more and more difficult. It's like pulling teeth with them, but it has to be done. They need to have healthier hearts if they're going to outlive me.

I worry for my son's health as well. He has type two diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and sleep apnea. I took him to an obesity specialist last year and he lost around 15 pounds but he then gave up on his weight loss plan and gained everything back plus more. He is now home schooled because of all the teasing and bullying he faced at school and I cant do anything about his eating habit because he buys all the fattening junk food he wants with his money from his job. He is now taking Belviq a prescription weight loss drug as a last resort before being scheduled for lap band surgery. I feel out of options and helpless but at 330 pounds I feel like surgery might be his only option to save his life from an early death.

9 - 4ft7
12 - 4ft10
14 - 5ft4
Not rapid. This has been many years of bad eating and not exercising and me getting defensive every time it was mentioned instead of addressing the problem.

Sorry I forgot to mention, how tall are they? Is this a rapid weight gain (ex- like 50 lbs a year)?
