Hi, I'm writing about my son Elijah. My wife and I were called to the school to talk to the school nurse and we were told what should have been obvious to us; Eli was very overweight. Somehow we had both not seen his weight problem. We had assumed he was a normal healthy child and were shocked to be told at 3ft11 and 185lbs he was obese. Yes we had problems finding clothes for him and yes we saw he had a belly but so did all his friends, though nowhere near as big, and we felt he was normal. Well he has never eaten a lot of junk food, he just eats a lot in general and is very inactive barely moving from the couch from the moment he gets home till when he goes to bed.
That was back at the beginning of June and our attempts to get him moving over the summer have failed and he has outgrown, in width, his old school uniform. We're both at a loss as where to go next. Incentives for getting moving haven't worked and over the summer he has grown to 198lbs and his breathing (due to his asthma) and movement has gotten much more laboured. If you have any ideas to stop his outward growth we would much appreciate it.

I know! I'm actually a huge fan of McDonald's fries myself, but I don't think it has much of a hold on my weight, since I'm not medically overweight.
I hate when people are stereotypical like that. I believe that things like video games, TV, and fast food, don't determine ones weight. A person who is inactive may gain weight, but who's to say they're not reading books instead of watching TV. Overweight people are still people.

i hate when someone sees an overweight child and just says he/she must be eating alot of McDonalds or spend his/her days in front of a videos game all day. my daughter is 5 and weights 55 pounds. and yes, we go quite often to McDonald's but this is my fault, because i love it there. my daughter is overweight because of my lifestyle and not because she wants to eat junkfood all the time.
and by the way we don't have any videogames and my daughter spends a lot of her time playing outside - but she is still overweight.

Why did Gertrude automatically think McDonald's?
The world is stereotypical these days.
Control his diet. Only keep healthy snacks, like fruit or yogurt within his reach, and still limit those as well. Don't buy junk food, and don't give him extra money to do so himself.
If he doesn't want to exercise get him to do something fun and semi-active with you, like play catch or go for a walk, or even just go swing at the park.
I hope these sugestions help.
The best of luck to you and your son! =D
