Hi everyone, I have a 16 year old girl who is 5'7 and roughly 180lbs. She gained the bulk of her weigh over the past 6 months or so, since i started working again and she has the ability to eat at home while I'm not there. Her gaining the weight doesn't bother me as much as the way she's handled it. As much as I offer she won't buy any bigger cloths, and insists on wearing extrememly tight outfits and just lets her stomach stick out. What confuses me is that she doesn't seem to care at all. Anyone else have this trouble? How can a young girl not try to hide the fact that she became overweight? Thanks, Joan

Go to a doctor to make sure she NEEDS to lose weight before you try anything.

when i was 16, i weighed nearly 200 lbs. I wouldn't go shopping with my parents either, because I had to go to the mens secton to find clothes that fit me. i had to wear huge man shirts to fit around and hide my huge belly. My suggestion is that you give her some gift cards to some really cool stores that ALSO have bigger sizes, so no one will know she had to but BIG clothes. Old Navy & Torrid are great, Torrid also has excellent online shopping for bigger girls & really helped me to be comfortable and confident and pretty even at 200.

Hmm I think I would try taking her shopping for new clothes with you present and if she continues to be drawn to the smaller sizes then I would be honest with her. I would discuss how it comes across and not to mention how uncomfortable it is, but you do not want her peers taking her the wrong way.Somtimes adults included we think if the tag still says an 8 even though we are really a 12 then we feel better about ourselves...size on the tag doesn't matter as much as the fit and she will feel better and look better in a larger size and maybe with this discussion she will be honest as to how she feels about the weight.

Oh thanks a lot, I had assumed she was much more overweight than that, from looks. Although this is good news...Thanks for your help. As i mentioned though I don't mind her being overweight as much as the way she dresses to it, any suggestions with that?

P.S it is always harder to take advice from your mom no matter the age, she probably feels bad but can't show you..and if your weight is normal then that is intimidating....

Hi Joan, your daughter is really only 25lbs overweight and if she increased activity to 30 min a day and decreased calories by 50 calories a day she would lose that in one year of if she decreased by 200 cal with the same exercise it would take her only 7 months. Those calories are = to 12 oz of juice replaced with water a day...or switching to skim milk from whole...or skip a snack a day..sometimes they are just discouraged and feel it would take to much time..let her know it is possible and she will feel 10 times better...
