I just would like to start off by saying that this is one of the best sites in regard to over weight children and teens. I find it fascinating that there are people in this world that care enough to help such children. Any way, the reason that I am writing is in regard to my 14 year old son. My son, for most of his life has been a 'big boned' child. He has always have had an enormous appetite, just like his father. However, in the past year, I've noticed that his stomach seems to be getting a little bit bigger. In the beginning, it just seemed a little rounder, which I passed up for the fact that he had just hit puberty (his voice was changing and he was developing facial hair already!) so I assumed he would grow. However, after a few months, I took notice of his shirts and pants. The buttons of his shirts looked as though they were ready to pop off at any given second, and the tails weren't staying tucked in. His pants top button never stayed closed, and the zipper dose not go all the way up. His measurements are 5'5, 180 pounds. What should I do?

I'm alot like your son, only I'm 3 inches taller and 5 pounds heavier. What size pants does he wear? I wear 34, and their getting tight. If its possible, I'd like to email with your son. If this is okay, post back with his email address.

This is a bit tricky because he is obviously still growing and, like you say, he is naturally big boned. On the other hand, it could be the start of a weight problem. It could also be that he is simply eating too much and the wrong foods. 14 as well is a sensitive age and the beginning of the stroppy teenage years so he probably isn't going to take kindly to any mother/son talks on healthy eating. Also, if he is active doing sports then he probably does get hungry. The problem with even gradual over-eating is that the stomach very quickly gets used to eating more and expects it. Any diet he goes on will make him feel hungry. Looking at what he eats, you will be able to tell if it is too high in fat and calories. Maybe go for low calorie/low fat foods of the type that he likes. Believe me, he won't be able to tell the difference. You can get low fat versions of virtually everything. I am afraid Macdonalds and junk food is definitely a no-no or just as an occasional treat. That is laden with fat and calories. Maybe do this gradually so he hardly notices. It could also be that he will grow into his weight without you having to do anything too drastic. I hope this helps.
