After not having classes since last March, my son Lane's 7th grade starts in person learning tomorrow. He's very enthusiastic but I'm worried. Yesterday we went shopping for school clothes. He's been wearing sweatpants and tee shirts for a year. None of his school clothes from last year fit. We ended up getting him size 54 jeans and men's size 4X polo shirts. I was surprised. He and my nephew Mario have been spending all their free time lifting weights to get ready to play football. I know they gotten bigger,, but I had no idea how big. When we got home, I weighed Lane. He's 307 lbs at 5'2". Mario weighed himself too. He's 16, 5'9" and 360.  Lane is so big compared to a year ago. I'm praying that school goes OK for him.

Jesse, as an educator and a parent, the schools concerns are valid. Your son is more than 3 times the size of the average 12 year old, and the bully’s mothers concerns are valid as well. Imagine someone tackling you who is literally 3 times your size. It can bring damage. I would be very concerned as a parent if my 12 year old was tackled by someone morbidly obese, 3 times the size of my child. I know that other boy could not breathe, and yes, the counselor is right, your son does present a danger to other students when being physical. Jesse, your son is too heavy for 12 years old, and you should do something about it. I’ve been reading your prior responses and it seems as if you just let this little boy become 300 pounds. You should also encourage him to not start fights no matter the circumstances. Especially during covid. As a teacher, unless there is complete evidence that your child needs to resort to physical violence, whoever throws the 1st punch holds some liability.

Yesterday afternoon I got called to Lane's school. He was in a fight with another boy. This boy was teasing Lane and a couple other fat boys in Lane's class. Lane finally challenged him to a fight because he made one boy, Lane's good friend, cry. After wrestling around a teacher broke it up. Lane is suspended from school until a meeting on Thursday.  The bully's mother has complained that Lane hurt her son because while they were wrestling Lane came out on top, pinning the bully. He complained he couldn't breathe, so the counselor told me Lane is considered a danger to other students!

Have you brought him to a doctor recently? I think at some point for Lane it's more about making sure he's doing something about this and not just telling him. I know it is hard but he's only 12 and it is possible to control what he's eating to a point. My son is doing ok, lost about 20 pounds in past couple months. He's still really heavy, around your son's weight actually.

Wow Jesse, he’s so big! Are you trying to slow down his gain? 307 at 5’2 is quite massive. If you haven’t, it’s imperative that you get him on a weight loss plan. No 12 year old should have a BMI that high. Where is he getting the food? Why are you providing so much food? He’s your son, not your friend. It’s time to put your foot down and nip this in the bud. Time to put away the twinkies and the fast food trips. He and your nephew are far too big. He’s 300 now, could easily be 350-400 by the end of the year at this rate. How are you letting this go on?

Seongwha, Lane came home from school yesterday very happy, so I'm relieved. He was up early this morning ready to go. Lane and my nephews Mario and Louis have really been into lifting weights and "bulking up". All have huge appetites and tell me the bulk is really muscle.  I've been telling them for six months they need to be doing cardio, running and walking. They listen and agree but never do cardio. Lane and Mario both are so fat now I know jogging is really tough but they need to start. As for me, I'm doing fine. Still in.my parents who have lost a child bereavement group which meets on zoom. It's a big help.
How is your son doing?

That's really big Jesse. Are you worried he's gonna be made fun of at school? How are things going for you? Have you talked to him about his weight recently?
