Last summer I posted about my son Leo. who has been gaining a lot of weight over the past year and a half since he turned 10. Leo now weighs 173. My medical insurance covers physicals for us on our birthdays. My second son Lane just turned 10 on Nov. 2. The doctor says

Thanks for your concern Janis. Yesterday at a family Christmas party a couple of my cousins told me not to worry about Leo and Lane, that they're just going through a phase and will slim down in their teens.

Jesse, excuse me for butting in again. I really am worried about your sons based on what you've shared. I strongly urge you to intervene and get control over how much food is available to your sons and how much they eat. I wish I had done so 3 years again when my son Paul started to get fat and everyone told me it was just a phase he was going through. Now he's 13, 300 pounds and even though his health is good right now, I'm petrified of the health problems he might face in the future.

Dave, do you think I'm worrying too much about my boys' weights and appetites? They're good kids, do well in school, have friends and get along well with each other. I guess there's a lot worse things than a kid being chubby.

I have never brought up the topic, but I don't think their eating habits are that "off" either. They both just love to eat big, so do I, but snacking is not every day. As for now they are reasonably active, good at school, so I haven't stressed the weight issue any.

I admit I'm not a good role model. I weigh 210 and put on all this weight after my wife died 5 years ago (about 50 pounds). I work from home (accountant) and spend a lot of time at my computer. Should be a lot more active I know.

Janis, I give both boys money each day to buy lunch at school. Leo has been buying 2 lunches for the past year and last week Lane told me he needed more money for the same reason. Plus they buy slices of pizza at school. Both say 1 lunch isn't enough because it's too small.

My son has been gaining weight for the past 3 years, Jesse, and he gets very defensive when I try to bring up his weight, how much he eats, or even how much he weighs. He always responds by saying he's hungry and all his friends and his cousin are "big" and so there's no problem. Once in a while he tries to dig at me by asking why I don't love him. This really hurts me. When I challenge him on this he says if I loved him I wouldn't nag him all the time about his weight. In the meantime, he's almost 5'10" (tallest in his class) and weighs 297 pounds. It kills me that my handsome son will soon be 300. I'm telling you this just to let you know that boys (at least mine and my nephew) see themselves as "big", not "fat". My son Paul and his closest friends (all chubby/fat) sometimes have eating contests to see who can eat the most! I guess it's a guy thing but I can't convince him it's unhealthy and he doesn't listen when his pediatrician talks with him.. Aside from his weight/eating, we have a good relationship and to me that's me the main thing you need to do with your sons, Jesse. At some point they'll be ready to take control of their weight and they need to feel you are there to support them. You mentioned how much they eat when they're with you. What about when they're at school? Do they have pocket money? My son Paul gets a substantial allowance from his grandmother (which I have no control over) and he spends it all on food at school and snacks on the way to and from school. You mentioned your weight. Are you a good role model for your boys? Best of luck.

Dave, have you ever spoken to your boys about their weight or their eating habits? My two are eating constantly. I stop for gas and they go into the mini-mart and come out with big bags of chips and cookies which they start eating even tho we had a meal an hour before.

Both my boys, currently 14 and 17, have always been big. They both seemed to gain quite a bit right before puberty, so that seems normal. They have of course gotten much taller, but also put on more weight. I decided not to bother much about their weight.

Within a year I got about 6" taller but still kept a little chub on my chest and gut. I was so embarrassed because of my mom's teasing that I never took my shirt off in public(like at the pool) until I got married. I'm so afraid of saying the wrong thing about weight to my boys.

Jane, I haven't brought up weight at all with either of my boys. When I was 11 I went thru a stage where I gained about 50 pounds very quickly, all in the belly, chest, and rear end and hips and thighs. My mother freaked out and put me on a diet and made fun of me to family members. It was hell.Within

Jesse, have you spoken to your sons about their rapid weight gain and their eating habits?

This started last spring which is when Lane started to take seconds at meals and constantly snack, just like Leo. Lane was like this before, but soon started to gain weight, not so much at first but its now very obvious

What you say makes sense Janis, and I've tried it. Leo told me that he doesn't like walking because it makes him too tired. Lane then agrees.(He goes along with whatever his big brother says and does, even when eating.

Hello Jesse, Please don't take this the wrong way but it sounds like you are encouraging your sons to overeat even though I'm sure you don't mean to. You take them for a snack every day after school and then I'm betting that you go home and have dinner. I would suggest you cut down on the food consumption for all 3 of you (you mentioned that you're overweight too, tight?) If I read your posts correctly your oldest son has gained a lot of weight in a short period time and your second son is heading in the same direction. Just a suggestion...instead of going for fast food after school how about taking them for a walk? You 3 can talk while exercising. Hope this helps.

Dave, both boys played youth soccer. Leo quit in 2017, said he didn't like all the running. He had already put on a lot of fat by that point. Lane quit soccer this year, same reason. Now they're inactive pretty much. I drop them off at school and pick them up every day and we usually stop for a snack and talk about how school went. I try to give them a lot of attention to make up for them losing their mom (It's been hard for all 3 of us.) Yesterday for Thanksgiving we had a pot luck dinner with neighbors. Leo and Lane are the only 2 boys their age. I kept an eye on them and they each ate a ton during the afternoon and evening. Last night after we got home Leo asked if we could get pizza. I told him we had been eating all day and he started with the "but I'm hungry Dad and Lane jumps in with "we're hungry Dad", carbon copy of his brother. This morning I was weighing myself in the bathroom when Lane came in. I got him on the scale and he's 100 pounds now. Dave, can you tell me a little about your boys? I really need to know if what Leo and Lane are growing thru is normal or if I'm doing anything wrong. Thanks

Sounds like me and my sons, except mine are a bit older. How is the physical activity level? We try to be active, but I know it can be very hard to do.

I admit I'm not a good role model. I weigh about 210 , all gained since my wife passed away. I've tried not buying snacks and trying to eat healthy but I like McDonald's as much as my boys and it's hard to say no too them. Meanwhile Lane now has a pot belly and I know I need to do something.

Leo and Lane both were always slender. Leo turned 10 and suddenly started eating a lot and putting on weight. He now wears my jeans (size 36 with the legs rolled up) because he's too fat for boys husky sizes.

I'm really worried that Lane is starting the same weight gain that his older brother is going through. I work from home and so I notice how much snacking Lane does and at meals he's always taking extra helpings, just like Leo. My wife passed away 5 years ago so it's just me and my 2 sons.

Sorry, I'm posting from my phone. The doctor says Lane is 4'7 and weighs 93 and he's overeeighht. This is just how Leo started out. How do I keep the same thing from happening to Lane?
