My son is 9 4'10" and 157 lbs., he outweighs his 16 y/o brother and is bigger around than my husband. Clothes shopping is a nightmare and he only wears sweats. Any basic activity has him huffing and puffing and he complains it hurts when he does anything active. We've tried many things to change his (and family) eating habits but he just continues to gain. His peds dr isn't too concerned and says he'll grow into it. But it breaks my heart and I lay in bed and cry sometimes because I know he is not happy and he can't keep up with other kids at school or even do basic things like shower and wipe himself appropriately due to his weight. Feeling kinda lost and just looking for support from other parents who are or have dealt with this.

Junk food must be eaten only in some quantity. You are lucky that your child'e just 9 and that he's a boy. I've a daughter and I know how hard it is to make a teenage girl who is naturally big-boned and fat lose weight. The best remedy is - 1.Change your son's appetite. Prevent further increase in weight. He will grow into that weight. 2.Let your son exercise for around 30 min per day. Take him for walks in parks or help him to exercise at home. It will be difficult at first but as a parent, give all the emotion,mental and physical support. Every fat child requires physical support during exercise as it will help them to get adjusted to such workouts. I truly tell you, my daughter couldn't even stand up without tremendous hardwork if she sat cross-legged on the floor. Not that she was too obese, she had lack of exercise even though she was super-strong. I helped my daughter a lot while exercising at home like holding her body from falling down while she was doing push-ups.
