Hi everyone. My son Jude was fairly healthy looking and skinny for the majority of his life. But it was this past summer that he started packing some weight on. He stayed a couple weeks with my sister, and when I picked him up, he was noticeably fatter. All his clothes were way too tight. I was definitely concerned, and I took him to the doctor for his sports physical. The doctor said that he put on 45 pounds from his last check-up, weighing 200 lbs. He's 5'7" by the way. The doctor was very concerned and said that I should monitor his eating and excercise. But the problem is now, that he quit the cross country team because he says he can't run fast anymore. So he's clearly been putting on more weight not running. I'd say he's somewhere around 215 or 220 lbs now. Is there anything I can do about this?

I have been monitoring his eating, and I haven't noticed any differences. So you're right, he must be eating outside the house. But his friends haven't been putting weight on; only Jude has been. He swears that he isn't eating though! I really don't know what to do. He's just been moping around all day lately. He's now wearing a size 40 pants, which are bigger than his fathers! He tells me that people have been calling him fat all around and I just don't know what to do!

Just a question---have you been able to monitor your son's eating as the doctor suggested? Does he eat a lot at meals, in-between meals, or does he have the money to buy fast food and snacks when he's out of the house? My son received a big allowance and we couldn't understand why he was steadily getting fatter and fatter when he didn't seem to be eating that much at home. Then we discovered he was stopped for snacks on his way to school and every day after school wouold stop at McD's, BK, or Sonic (all on the way home depending on the route he took). He and his freinds were all pigging out and putting on weight.
