My son just came home from summer camp and I couldn't beleive my eyes. He gained 18 pounds in the 7 weeks he was gone. None of his pants button anymore! He is not upset. He says he likes his new belly. How could this happen in such a short time, and how can I get him to turn around?

That was the assumption I got, primarily from the phrase "...his new belly."

Let me ask Marry, is was your son skinny before he went, and now he is fat?

My son went through a similar phase, what I would recommend is calmly sitting down and talking to him about it. Because if its something he really wants to do, all of the data in the world won't change the mind of most eleven year olds. If he sticks to it tell him that you're okay with it but tell him he still needs to be physically active and suggest signing him up for a youth sports league. Depending on the sport it it will help keep the weight off, and even if it doesn't he will be in better health than if he didn't participate. Personally i would suggest football. That way whether or not he gains weight there will a position on the team and he will be forced to stay active as opposed to soccer where an overweight player will likely not see the field as much. Generally what im trying to say is that if he REALLY wants to gain weight then the best thing you can do is encourage a healthy lifestyle in parallel to the one he wants. You can eat a high amount of calories and be in great health. Michael Phelps consumes over 12,000 calories a day during training/competition.

Uh gertrude, thats not a good way to go about doing that. He wouldnt trust his mom anymore. Try sending him to a weight loss camp next year.
