My daughter weighs 170 lbs at the age of 12. She is quite strong and admits that she is embarrased about her weight. I caught her standing on scales when she did not know I was looking. She does eat healthy although she does have the occasional junk food. I am concerned that she could go diabetic as both her mother and I are. Her mother has had a serious weight problem and has bariatric surgery. I think my daughter will have the same thing too one day.

It is difficult to imagine you child going through the same tough times as your wife had to go through regarding Diabetes and weight loss. The important thing is that your child is young and can learn healthy behaviors. It sounds like she eats healthy but as you said there is the occasional junk food. It really depends on how often kids eat these types of foods on whether they will make an impact on weight gain. Watch for snacking. Snacks can fit into a daily routine, but be sure the snacks do not look like meals. Kids are often eating adult portion sizes. Try to incorporate a family activity or encourage your child to join a local sport at the YMCA. It is important you keep them eating healthy and moving.
