My son is 9 and weighs 155 lbs. He is 4'8. Most of his weight is in his belly. But he carrys it all over. People tell me he should be in football!! He is not interested right now. He is pretty active runs around with other kids, swms. Now he will be starting soccer. He does like to sit and play games and play on the computer. I do not see anything wrong with this. The only fear I have this year is that he is starting 3 grade and kids will make fun of him. He has lots of friends that don't, but I am sure with bus ride he has to get on with the 3, 4 and 5 graders he is going to get picked on. He for some reason does not tell us everything that goes on with the other kids on the bus. I listen to everyone telling me he needs to loose some weight. I am really tired of it. Health wise I am nervous with Diabeties running in my family. I also have a weight problem. I just purchased pants for him and had to get a mens 36/30. They are a bit big, so he will have to wear a belt. I had to take tons off the bottom but he likes them. He thinks they look good on him. I love my little guy NO MATTER WHAT SIZE HE IS. I would like some feedback from some parents that are going through the same thing I am and let me know how I should handle all the issues/problems I am going to be facing.

How much does he weigh now, and how tall is he?

Loving your child regardless of their size is great, but at his size he is facing not only social issues and challenges but major health issues also. You should be talking to his peditrician to work out an eating plan to help him lose weight. If he isn't interested in sports, how about family bike rides or family walks. You get in family time and exercise at the same time.
He may not be telling you everything he faces, but from listening to what my daughter faces its alot of teasing, she is 5ft and 127

We are in the same boat. My son will be 9 in Nov. is 4'10" and 165 lbs. and just started 3rd grade at a new school. He does not like sports. We have tried baseball, soccer and swimming, he finished the seasons but did not want to go back. Last winter we did drums that went real well and then the teacher went off to college this fall. He now wants to do karate so we'll give that a try soon. My 15 year old son in tall and lanky and very into sports and the younger one is content just watching his brother. I am also overweight and have been all my life. I have lived through the teasing and such and did not want this for my children. We just ordered him some pants (18H) at huskyfashions.com and they fit perfect except I have to hem them a little. I used to make his pants when he went to private school and he didn't have any jeans. Now he has two pair of jeans and a pair of camo pants and is thrilled. He is such a sweetheart with a good sense of humor so maybe the taunting will not bother him. He has not complained about yet but that does't mean it hasn't started. I'm afraid that since he is now going to public school the behavior is not as guarded as it was in private school. We had him to a pediatric endo doc last summer and he is in good health and his problem is genetic. We watch sugar, carbs and fat. I have taught him to read the food labels and make good choices when I am not around. We'll see what the doctor says when he goes for his physical this year. It will be nice talking to someone who knows what I am experiencing.
