Since the new year my son has put on 30 pounds. It came as a bit of a shock after going to the doctors yesterday. It seems though that he doesn't care at all that he has gone from an average 130 to 160. He has outgrown all of his pants and most of his shirts. I'm trying to get him motivated but it seems like he doesn't care -- like he almost wants to gain weight. Help me before my child becomes obese!

Hey... pretty much that same thing happened to me: I was 160 then i went to 190. But i am pretty tall (5'10"). So anyway i got myself motivated by thinking how next year i am going into high school and that i am going to make a fresh start. My goal is to get into a size 9! Good luck to you and your son! :-)

Having four boys of my own, I can say that all my kids put on weight and than they put on the height. All my kids are medium to big build to start off with and then when they put on the weight it can make them awkward and shy esp. if it is summer and there is a lot of pool time. I dont think it is anything to worry of too much. Just my 2 cents.

My daughter is only 9 and she weights the same as your son.

It could be a growth spurt seeing that he is only 13. When I was 13 I was like 5'6" and 170...just watch him and talk to your doctor to make sure it doesn't get out of control because I am now 6'3" and 260 with diabetes and heart problems...not trying to scare you, just making sure you are aware.

Hello Tim, I agree with what Bill, the first guy to reply, says. It's all up to your son. Just was wondering, though. What did the doctor say? Did he comment of your son's gain? Some boys around age 13 go through a growth spurt where they get taller and fill out all of a sudden. And outgrowing clothes at ahe 13 does happen. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if the doctor doesn't think there's a problem, don't look for one. Whether or not you son is too heavy, you should be encouraging him to be active---do things with you. (That's true even if he is skinny, right?)

If he wants to gain weight, I don't guess there is much that you can do. Just encourage him to lose weight, but don't force him. But let it ultimatly be his decision of what he eats. He will probably get mad if you force him on a diet or weight loss program.
