I'm curious as to how many of the parents out there who have posted also have weight issues?

I think it is key that when mom and dad also have the good habits they usually trickle down to our children and if we are happy and healthy are children's odds are greater that they will be also.

I had weight issues all my life too, in fact I admit that much of my sons weight problems started when he was little and was "mommys eating buddy". Now he is doing great, he dropped almost 20 pounds this summer and grew a inch to 6'4"...yes, he is only 13!! I now walk 6 miles a day 6 days a week and do a bit of resistance training 3 times a week.

Hi I am severely obese at over 400 lbs and my 8 yo son
is ooverweight at 150 (at 4'9)
I was the first overweigh person in my family, both parents and brothers are lean or muscular. I started being chubby in my lower teens, and my fatphobic parents constantly nagged me about my weight and how much I ate. In protest and hunger I always ate as much as I could afford, and gained weight constantly.

Mary, I too have fought the battle, I was 200lbs at 14 wearing a size 18 at 5 feet 4", I was miserable and hated myself. My mother's side are all very overweight and have a strong diabetic history and heart problems. I kind of woke up one day and said no more and was not going to lock myself into a misery of a lifetime. I began to read everything I could get my hands on on nutrition and exercise...and the one thing that I knew is diets don't work and skipping meals will destroy the body. I found muscle magazines of all things that helped me see that you can transform your body if you want it bad enough and these people eat anything they want because they workout daily and therefore have an increased metabolism. And no I did not become muscle bound but I found an answer and to this day I have to watch what I eat but I balance it and eat just about anything as long as the main part of my diet is very healthy..and I workout 5 days a week 30-60 minutes a day. No age is a limit to change and I also find the people we surround ourselves with can encourage or discourage depending on their life stlyle as well....

In our family of four, just me and one of my sons. My son is experiencing the same type of weight problem I have had my entire 47 years of life (genetics). I do not let myself get above a certain weight, and I weigh now what I weighed in high school. I am trying to teach my 7 yr old how to keep his weight under control and to exercise. We seem to gain just by looking at food and he is doing good so far. Mind you we are not so overweight we can't move. I'm 50 lbs over and my son around 20 lbs, basically we just try not to gain.
