Hello, my daughter is 12 years old. In one week she gained 5 pounds. She noticed that her belly was getting big so she told me and I said it is perfectly normal during puberty. After our conversation i noticed a big decrease in her appetite and i asked her why she was not eating. She said because i'm fat mom! So we had a little fight about her weight. I said just watch what you eat and no junk food. The problem is that she is not commited enough to be on a diet. She does not want to work out because she has big muscles and she does not want to get bigger muscles. I dont know what else to suggest. She is very upset and does not want to hang out with her friends and we have constant fights about her going to school. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The best thing to do for a child who is overweight is wipe the word diet form their vocab. Diet is a short term answer to a lifetime problem. Eating healthy and eating to live and not living to eat is key. I was that obese child ..age 13 200lbs. Eating small meals 5times a day..healthy choices and being active, limit t.v and no eating while watching....no soda, koolaid, just water, skim milk, and limited to 1 serving of juice a day...fruits and veggies with every meal. I realize when you are young it is more about looks, but you need to teach your child that it is more about health and living to their fullest. If your child eats school lunches..STOP and make homemade lunches then you as the parent controls what they have at lunch time. Have your child try new fruits and veggies and help to cook and learn about nutrition.

First of all, for both Diane and Bernette, no matter how many times you tell you daughters they are not fat or overweight, they won't listen. They both need to understand that from experience, they will gain more weight back when they start to eat again than they lost. They also need to understand the health risks involved with starving yourself. Talk to both of their doctors and see what they can do for them. Take them as soon as possible. Hope I helped, Sammy.
