I need some help from you other parents out there. You see my daughter has a good self image. She has never felt uncomfortable with her weight, though the doctor told me at her last vist that she is about 25-30 pounds overweight. See, she's 14 and she weighs about 172 pounds. Sure, she has some fat on her stomach, but she has never had any probablems with it and i'm not going to ruin it with a diet. But now i have learned from my daughter that when they start track in 2 weeks the gym teacher will weigh all of the kids in her class, boys and girls, and say what they weigh out loud. I find this totally out of line and have spoken to the teacher but she said she has done it this way for 10 years and isn't going to change. My daughter doesn't want to do it because she knows that she's overweight and doesn't want to be laughed at. What can i do? Is there anything?

I totally understand your situation I am 13 and I am not a parent, sry to disapoint you. I consider myself overweight but I also have a low self esteem. Have you tried talking to your daughter about how she feels about herself? And then ask the docter their suggestions to help. Dont forget this is your daughter not you. I hope this helps

I remember having to get weighed in front of the class when I was an overweight child. It was very humiliating and there was no purpose for it. There is enough competition in playing a sport(amongst cruel kids). Needless to say I never wanted to go to gym class after that. If my son were to tell me that now, I would absolutely go over that teacher's head to the principal and state my concerns. I feel that it's harassment.

That's ridiculous! That does nothing but humiliate the kids and make them feel bad about themselves! If I were you, I would go to the department head or principal. In today's society for a teacher to do something that blatantly cruel is inexcusable. If the department head and principal won't help, try the school board or write your daughter a note to get her out of gym or have the family doctor do it. I can't believe that this teacher has been doing that to kids for 10 years without anyone stepping in!
