Ht. 5'2", Start: 165 lb, Today: 161.5 lb (BMI %tile: 98), Goal: 100 lb - I come from a pretty... large family. My mother has to weigh over 250 lbs and my dad probably weighs in closer to 300. I try to eat somewhat healthy. For example, my typical diet includes a drink with nothing but fruit and vegetable juices and vitamins for breakfast, for lunch I have half of a salad [my school has somewhat large salad portions] and a few saltine crackers, and for dinner I have a serving of meat, 1 to 2 servings of vegetables, and a starch or two. My snacks usually include spinach and/ or carrots and a little ranch dressing. I don't usually exercise on a regular basis, except for my walk home from my bus stop, which goes down 3 streets. I can't fit into normal clothes because most of my body fat is in my stomach. It's HUGE. Normal clothes don't fit me because of my weight, so I can't shop at normal stores that teens and preteens do like Aeropostal or American Eagle. I have to shop at Ross and Walmart and Target for my clothes because of the shape of my body so I get teased because of the clothes I wear. Can someone please help me?

Hey Savannah,
I know how it is being teased because of my weight, or because of the clothes I wear. First off, I wanna say that you probably aren't eating enough for your body to run efficiently. It's probably in starvation mode, and because of this your body is probably holding onto everything you eat, instead of digesting it properly for the energy that it needs. At breakfast, start eating more! Try oatmeal and fruit, or eggs and whole grain toast. Also, drink lots of water! Try not to have much juice (there is a lot of added sugar), or soda (diet or otherwise-full of chemicals!).
Also, try to get more exercise. If you have a dog, take it for a walk with one of your parents or a friend if you live in a safe neighborhood. Try joining a team sport! Do anything you need to in order to get you moving!
It also might be a good idea to ask your doctor if you have a thyroid problem, and to test your blood sugar levels to see if you're at risk for getting diabetes.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, learn to love yourself! Studies have shown that people who have better self-esteem are more likely to lose weight, so make it a priority to LOVE YOU. And, be easy on yourself okay? You're only 12 years old and you should be having fun, not worrying about silly things like losing weight. Make lifestyle changes, don't go on a diet.
Good luck!
